UK’s Ofcom regulator floats new drone radar licence and proposes opening more airwaves

Ofcom, the independent regulatory and competition authority for UK communications industries, is proposing a new licence to enable earlier identification of drone threats. The regulator also proposes opening more airwaves to support drone use across industries.

The new drone radar licence would authorise drone detection radar at 24 GHz (24.05-24.25 GHz) and 16 GHz (15.4 GHz- 16.6 GHz). The 16 GHz authorisation would require case by case coordination with the Ministry of Defence.

Views are now being sought as to whether the two new bands of spectrum will meet the need for more radar detection technology.

Ofcom is also proposing to enable drones to access two additional bands of spectrum (450MHz and 5030 – 5091 MHz) for an interim period, where they can operate alongside existing users. The regulator is also seeking views on long term spectrum solutions to support growing drone use.

Ofcom is seeking input on how the UK’s spectrum framework can evolve to support the next generation of wireless innovation. The goal is to make it easier to develop, test and deploy new technologies while balancing the needs of existing spectrum users.
