EUROCAE’s Working Group (WG) 105 has published ED-341: Guidelines for showing compliance with SAIL III and IV non-design related SORA Operational Safety Objectives.
WG 105 is responsible for developing standards and guidance documents that will allow the safe operation of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) in all types of airspace, at all times and for all types of operations.
“ED-341 provides guidance supporting the EU Regulation 2019/947 Specific category of UAS operations, which represents a major opportunity for the European UAS/drone sector to develop competitive applications and services,” EUROCAE said. “While the regulatory framework is comprehensive, it remains complex, creating a need for structured support to facilitate its implementation by industry stakeholders.”
The new guidelines address the development of operations beyond low-risk scenarios, focusing on medium risk operations (SAIL III and IV as defined by the SORA methodology), where industry interest and business potential are significant. It establishes guidance to enable UAS operators to obtain operational authorisations for such activities, filling the gap where no practical guidance had been available.
The guidelines apply specifically to medium risk operations (SAIL III and IV) within the Specific category defined in (EU) 2019/947. They support operators in demonstrating compliance with the non-design-related Operational Safety Objectives (OSOs) described in SORA Annex E, which are recognized by EASA as an Acceptable Means of Compliance (AMC) to Article 11 of Regulation (EU) 2019/947.
