Residents of São Paulo can now have their food orders delivered by drone.
Authorised by Brazilian civil aviation agency ANAC and the Department of Airspace Control, iFood’s service uses a Speedbird Aero drone to fly orders from the city’s Iguatemi Alphaville shopping mall to Barueri, a densely populated residential area.
The drone covers an aerial stretch of 3.6 kilometres in about five minutes. After landing at a droneport installed at an apartment building, a delivery partner completes the final stage of the delivery to the consumer’s home.
Up to 5kg can be transported by the drone, which is monitored in real time at an operational centre in Franca in northeastern São Paulo. Two drones are authorised to fly at any one time.
According to iFood, the service is the first delivery route authorised to fly over densely populated residential areas.
Before launching its operations in São Paulo on June 1, iFood was already using drones in Sergipe, on a route between Aracaju and Barra dos Coqueiros. According to the company, more than 5,000 orders have already been fulfilled in this northeastern operation.
