Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) says a record number of participants from 25 countries took part in the Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems (JARUS) safety and risk management meeting in Tokyo from May 18-22.
The main item on the agenda was the revision of the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) guidance for risk assessment of drone flight safety. Risk assessment methods for drone flights based on SORA have been adopted in many countries, including Japan.
During the JARUS meeting, Japan presented an overview of its drone regulations and flight examples applying risk assessment guidelines created based on the content of SORA, shared knowledge towards the revision of SORA and engaged in active discussions with other countries.
MLIT says Japan will further strengthen its involvement in the development of international drone regulations and promote international cooperation towards expanding the safe use of drones.
The event also included an ISO – International Organisation for Standardisation briefing by Lance King and Yoshi Ishikawa and updates from the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau, European Union Aviation Safety Agency, Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia, UK Civil Aviation Authority, Qatar Civil Aviation Authority, ANAC – Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil (Brazil) and the Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology.
