Drone shows scheduled for May 26 and 27 at the Vivid Sydney event in Australia have been cancelled after a malfunction during yesterday evening’s show.
Local media reports that around 90 drones fell from the sky over the city’s Darling Harbour during a display. The reports say the company behind the drone show is Skymagic. Footage shared by event attendees on social media show the drones entering the water, close to crowds.
The organisers of Vivid Sydney said future displays have been cancelled due to “unforeseen technical difficulties experienced during Monday night’s performance”. A statement said that no decisions have been made at this stage regarding the drone show scheduled for May 31 and beyond. A full assessment is underway.
National broadcaster ABC spoke with Skymagic, who attributed the malfunction to a change in radio frequency after takeoff and said none of the drones fell outside safety boundaries.
The ‘Star-Bound’ drone show was scheduled to take place at 19:30 and 21:30 local time on May 25. The 19:30 display was cancelled due to the weather.
