Flylogix joins UK CAA Innovation Sandbox programme testing emerging unmanned operations

The UK Civil Aviation Authority International (CAA) has selected UK inspection company Flylogix to participate in its Innovation Sandbox programme first launched in May 2019. Innovation Sandbox offers UK aviation companies the chance to collaborate over emerging concepts. Flylogix will work alongside Total, NATS and The Oil & Gas Technology Centre.

According to a Flylogix press release, the project will enable the company to:

  • expand our safe operation of unmanned aircraft into open airspace alongside other air users providing routine services for the offshore energy industry;
  • build on an existing North Sea focussed programme with the Oil and Gas Technology Centre, energy provider and producer Total and National Air Traffic Services (NATS), and
  • allow Flylogix to mobilise at short notice from four strategically located operating hubs and reach any UK offshore asset within hours, providing a range of services including environmental monitoring, surveillance and delivery.

Collaboration with the CAA is key to scaling the benefits of unmanned aviation, opening up huge opportunity across the offshore energy sector.

Frédéric Laugère, Innovation Services Lead at the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said: “Using unmanned aircraft to assist the offshore energy industry is a perfect use for the technology and one that we are keen to see develop. We are delighted to welcome Flylogix to our innovation sandbox to enable us to work together on this area which has the potential to deliver key benefits to a vital part of the UK’s energy infrastructure.”
