Romania strengthens air defence with Merops C-UAS and SHORAD-VSHORAD systems

The Merops anti-drone system, made available to Romania by the United States within the framework of a bilateral strategic partnership, has been operationalised and integrated into the defence capabilities of the Romanian Army.

Before being put into service, the system went through the necessary stages of testing, evaluation and operational validation. Perennial Autonomy’s Merops interceptor is based on artificial intelligence algorithms, designed to detect, track and neutralise small aerial targets that operate at low altitudes.

In addition, Romania’s Ministry of National Defense announced on June 25 that the General Directorate for Armaments, through CN Romtehnica SA and the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd signed a framework agreement on the acquisition of SHORAD ( Short Range Air Defence) – VSHORAD (Very Short Range Air Defence) anti-aircraft systems.

The agreement provides for the acquisition of an integrated SHORAD-VSHORAD anti-aircraft system, three VSHORAD anti-aircraft systems, a SHORAD system, a training and education system, and a simulation system for the verification and evaluation of VSHORAD operators. The SHORAD-VSHORAD acquisition programme aims to equip the Romanian Army with systems to protect against aerial threats, including drones and cruise missiles.
