Indra has launched its DRIZZLE interceptor drone at UNVEX, an unmanned systems fair in Spain.
“This unmanned system, of reduced size and weight, is capable of reaching speeds of more than 400 kilometers per hour thanks to its propulsion system, and has an approximate range of 80 kilometers, which can be extended to 130 with the support of a mother drone,” said the company in a press release, translated from Spanish.
“Its main advantage over other systems lies in the search and detection system developed by Indra, which allows it to discriminate threats and lock on to the target with high precision.”
DRIZZLE can be integrated into anti-drone systems, acting as a hard-kill effector, or used as a self-protection solution on board ground vehicles or helicopters, said the company. To expand its radius of action by using disposable elements, Indra has also developed a mother drone, capable of carrying several smaller interceptors.
“This vector can fly at 30,000 feet for the first 80 kilometers to release the interceptors in the final phase of the mission so that they can travel an additional 50 kilometers, raising the total range to about 130 kilometers to reach their target. These mother drones can also fly in swarms to release a fine rain or drizzle of interceptors that saturate the opponent’s defenses and act, in turn, as an attack vector after completing their mission. DRIZZLE has been developed under a concept of a consumable system, designed to be disposable, to offer allied armies a competitive solution in terms of economies of scale and effectiveness against low-cost drone attacks.”
