Police are investigating after drones were spotted at India’s Amritsar Airport, near the Pakistan border, on Sunday night (6 September). Operations were suspended for approximately 90 minutes.
Airport Director Anirudh Kumar Sharma said Air Traffic Control (ATC) received information from the Indian Air Force at around 9:45 pm that drones had been “spotted across the airfield”, according to local media. Sharma added that several aircraft scheduled to land were in the airspace at the time.
“Following our standard operating procedure for drone sightings, a Joint Action Committee was activated and assembled in the control tower. They determined that the drone activity could disrupt scheduled landings, so the decision was made to close the airfield for operations,” he said.
Operations have since resumed. Police are yet to comment on the suspected origin or operator of the drones.
