China’s state television CCTV News shared video footage on Sunday of the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) counter-uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) units in training with laser weapons, integrated missile-gun systems and high-power microwave technology as a layered defence against hostile drones.
PLA troops conducted live-fire tactical drills involving multiple day and night scenarios, CCTV said, adding that radar was used to detect a “dense swarm of drones” at low altitude. The C-UAS units then used a combination of laser ‘dazzling’ and electromagnetic measures to disrupt the formation of the swarm. Interceptor drones were also deployed as well as anti-aircraft guns.
He Qing, a PLA serviceman quoted by CCTV, said the drills combined responses to different aerial threats with battlefield operations and the handling of unexpected situations in an unfamiliar, complex desert environment.
