LVNL to serve as the central information hub for drone operations in the Netherlands

The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management has designated Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) as the Common Information Service (CIS) provider, giving LVNL a new role in the safe integration of drones.

The CIS will serve as the central information hub for drone operations in the Netherlands, compiling relevant and up-to-date information about the airspace. Information about authorised drone flights will be made available in a more uniform manner in order to enhance situational awareness and support the safe and efficient management of all air traffic.

“To fly a drone safely, operators need to know, among other things, where they are permitted to fly, what airspace restrictions apply, and what other activities they need to take into account,” LVNL said, adding that CIS brings together relevant data from various stakeholders for this purpose. LVNL then validates this information and makes it available to drone operators and other stakeholders to create a reliable and up-to-date information picture on which various users can base their operations and services.

LVNL is developing the CIS in phases. The coming period will focus on practical testing with users and partners. Experince and insight gained from these tests will be used to further develop the CIS and subsequently expand the service in phases.
