Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has today announced its long-term vision for future air traffic systems, which looks ahead to 2040.
Known as CARATS 2040 (Collaborative Actions for Renovation of Air Traffic Systems), the vision is a result of efforts by the Council for the Promotion of Future Air Traffic Systems, which has met seven times since March 2024 to discuss the future of air traffic systems.
The council has been working on reorgansiing domestic airspace and introducing new technologies and operational methods to respond to the increase in air traffic and improve safety and convenience. CARATS 2040 will promote various measures in collaboration with industry, academia, and government in line with six core goals: strengthening safety and security measures, realising trajectory-based operation for optimal aircraft operation, realising sustainable air transportation, effective use of airspace in response to the diversification of air mobility, strengthening resilience, and strengthening international cooperation and promoting overseas expansion.
The Ministry says it will work with industry, academia and government “to take on the challenge of creating an innovative air traffic system”.
Details of the new vision and how it might incorporate Japan’s growing advanced air mobility operations are currently limited, but updates will be posted on the Ministry’s CARATS portal.
