The Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) and the Officine Meccaniche Irpine (OMI) have agreed to establish a temporary regulatory sandbox at the Grottaglie spaceport to develop the use of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) for health emergencies.
ENAC said on June 23 that the sandbox will allow testing of drone operations in a controlled and safe operating space, governed by simplified and flexible regulations.
“This agreement is linked to ENAC’s prospect of accompanying, through financing and certification activities, in coordination with EASA, a study that will be able to introduce a product of public utility to the market, with drones that will perform an important health and prevention service, combining technological innovation with the protection of human lives,” the authority stated.
