Australian regulator launches new safety management system resource for drone operators

Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has launched a new safety management system (SMS) resource booklet for commercial drone operators. An SMS is an organised approach to managing safety that can be highly effective for managing risks, reducing accidents, and providing a positive demonstration of safety performance.

The booklet is designed for use by commercial RPAS operators, with the information contained within the booklet targeted towards remotely piloted aircraft operator certificate (ReOC) holders who have either no formal SMS or only a basic SMS in place. It provides guidance on the elements of a SMS for organisations to consider when implementing, evaluating, or enhancing their SMS.

Other organisations may also find the information useful. While the booklet covers RPAS SMS considerations, it is designed to be used in conjunction with the other eight booklets in the SMS resources toolkit.
