The US government should create a widespread C-UAS National Guard capability and capacity with the ability to supplement state C-UAS mission needs, according to white paper from the New Hampshire (NH) Information and Analysis Center (NHIAC).
The NH Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Threat Working Group in its Recommendations to the Domestic Counter-UAS (C-UAS) National Action Plan, posted by David Kovar in a Linkedin post has made eight recommendations to the Domestic Counter-UAS (C-UAS) National Action Plan. Expanding the National Guard’s capabilities in this area is one of the key conclusions of the working group.
According to the text:
“The National Guard should be considered for a domestic C-UAS role. An expanded C-UAS National Guard mission would serve as a reserve for the active military component and as a supplemental force for the protection of state special events. National Guard Civil Support Teams are currently authorized to assist with special events protection by employing devices to protect against certain Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) at the request of Governors. This working group sees the C-UAS mission as being very similar. We do not believe that C-UAS should be the responsibility of the National Guard alone. We see an expanded National Guard capability as a supplement for future SLTT C-UAS capability. The military excels at standardizing training and operating procedures. All states would be well served if the National Guard could be funded to take on this mission and develop the capability and capacity to serve to protect special events from UAS attack.”
According to the National Guard Bureau website, the 1st Battalion, 204th Air Defense Artillery Regiment — one of two National Guard units taking part in Exercise Balikatan in the Philippines— travelled to a remote seaside location near San Narciso to provide short-range air defense with radar systems and Avenger Air Defense Systems at Balikatan 23 from April 18 to 26 earlier this year.
