Latvian prime ministry Evika Silina resigns following drone incursions from Russia

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina has resigned following the failure of the government to prevent drone incursions in the country.

On May 7, two drones entered Latvia from Russian airspace, hitting a fuel depot in Rezekne. No injuries were reported. Latvia’s minister of defence Minister Andris Spruds of the country’s Progressives Party was fired by the prime minister following the incident, and in response the Progressives Party pulled support from the government and left Evika Silinia without a majority.

So far this year there have been reports of drone incursions from Russia in Romania (seven airspace violations) and Poland (eight). Leaders of 14 NATO allies meeting in Bucharest on May 13 have condemned these airspace violations and called for an urgent strengthening of NATO’s integrated air and missile defence.
