French Army repurposing cannons to create new counter-drone system

The French Army is repurposing AA53 T2 anti-aircraft cannons into a new counter-uncrewed aerial systems tool. The new system integrates a thermal camera originally designed for Mistral missiles.

In a post on its social media platform, the army said the new system, known as Proteus, was developed in four months by the Ministerial Agency for Defense AI, which is a research and development agency focused on the adoption of artificial intelligence into military systems.

The first Proteus are expected to be delivered to the 35th Parachute Artillery Regiment this quarter, with additional AI-enabled units scheduled for delivery mid-2025.
