MBDA and Terma develop containerised air defence system with counter-drone capability

MBDA and Terma are developing a containerised air and surface defence system designed to protect naval vessels, offshore installations and land-based sites against threats including uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS).

The Self Protection Integrated Mistral 3 Module (SPIMM) combines MBDA’s SIMBAD-RC4 weapon system, using MISTRAL 3 missiles, with threat-detection sensors and a combat management system. Terma’s C2 system integrates sensor and tracking data into a shared tactical picture to support threat assessment and engagement.

The system is designed to counter a range of aerial threats, including UAVs, cruise missiles, aircraft and helicopters, as well as surface threats such as uncrewed surface vessels and one-way attack boats.

Housed in a standard ISO container and requiring only a power supply, SPIMM can be deployed on vessels without existing combat systems or relocated between ships and land-based sites. Potential applications include ports, naval bases, offshore oil and gas platforms and industrial facilities.

The development builds on a cooperation agreement signed by the companies at Eurosatory in June 2026.

The Fall issue of the 2026 Unmanned Airspace Global Counter-UAS Systems Directory is now available. The guide is the world’s only comprehensive, continually updated directory of global C-UAS companies and systems. It itemises over 1,000 C-UAS products and services with performance details, company sales and partnerships arrangements. It is updated every month and broken down into niche sub-sectors (net-capture, missiles, intercept drones, detectors etc) to give C-UAS procurement and industry personnel a unique perspective of global C-UAS technical capabilities and market positions. It is available in word, PDF and excel formats and Unmanned Airspace readers are eligible for a range of discounts. For more information about the Directory please contact the editor Philip Butterworth-Hayes at philip@unmannedairspace.info.
