KONGSBERG selects Echodyne radar for its PROTECTOR C-UAS weapon systems

KONGSBERG has selected Echodyne’s MESA radar platform for integration with its PROTECTOR RS4 and RS6 remote weapon stations (RWS), adding radar detection and tracking capabilities to the systems for counter-uncrewed aerial system (C-UAS) applications, according to a press release from the companies.

The companies said the integration combines KONGSBERG’s weapon-station architecture and Collaborative Fire Control capabilities with Echodyne’s solid-state radar. The MESA radar provides range, range-rate, bearing and kinematic data to support detection, tracking and targeting of drone threats.

The radar is intended to stabilise and cue the PROTECTOR optical fire-control system, helping the weapon station maintain target lock and shorten the time between detection and engagement. The companies said accurate range and range-rate data can also support the use of programmable airburst munitions against drones.

The radar-equipped weapon stations can also receive threat tracks from cooperative search radars or other sensors. The local MESA radar can then refine and maintain the track for fire-control purposes, supporting a search-cue-track-engage workflow across distributed systems.
