Drones hit nuclear sites and surrounding areas under Russian and Ukrainian control

The Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and the immediate surrounding area continues to be a target for drone strikes. Before the Russian invasion, ZNPP was an important part of Ukraine’s national infrastructure but the site is now under Russian control. Nuclear facilities in territories controlled by both countries are often targets, putting lives in danger.

At the end of May, operators of the ZNPP said that one of its vehicles was destroyed by a drone And on May 25, the plant said drone strikes had targeted civilian buildings in the nearby city, including the fire department.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that recent military activity, including reported drone strikes serve another reminder of the constant challenges to maintaining nuclear safety and security and preventing an accident during the conflict, at the ZNPP as well as at Ukraine’s operating nuclear power plants and the Chornobyl site.

The IAEA reported on May 28 that its team at the Chornobyl site was informed that a total of 20 drones were detected within the site’s monitoring zone over the past week alone. The site’s radiation shield was damaged in a drone strike in December 2025.
