Walmart makes drone delivery available via app

Starting later this month, Walmart customers in Dallas Fort-Worth will be able to order drone delivery through the Walmart app if they are eligible based on the address associated with their account.

The integration will be done in phases as more drone delivery sites launch and drone providers receive additional regulatory approvals to fly more goods across greater distances.

Walmart first began trialling drone delivery in 2021 and the service has grown rapidly, completing over 30,000 drone deliveries to date. Earlier this year, Walmart announced it was making drone delivery a reality for up to 75 percent of the Dallas Fort-Worth population.

Deliveries are powered by on-demand drone delivery providers, Wing and Zipline. Both are approved by the FAA to fly their drones beyond visual line of sight. Walmart says the drones deliver goods within 30 minutes, sometimes within 10 minutes.

The company intends to scale up its drone delivery business in the United States.
