Queensland’s Minister for State Development has announced a AUD14.5 million investment for the first phase of a commercial drone flight testing facility at Cloncurry Airport, Australia. The facility will test small-to-medium sized drones weighing between 30-150 kilograms, initially flying over short distances of up to 25 kilometres along a designated flight path away from built-up areas. Construction of the new facility is due to begin in early 2020, with plans to expand to become a global leader in autonomous technology. Among participating companies, Boeing plans to use the flight facility in 2020 to safely and securely test the latest advances in unmanned systems technology. Initial infrastructure includes a hangar, operation room and surveillance radar and communications equipment.
