US Army to lead joint-forces C-UAS capabilities task force

The United States Department of Defense plans to establish a forces-wide task force to accelerate the development and deployment of counter-uncrewed aerial systems capabilities (C-UAS). The initiative will be led by the US Army.

Vice Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. James Mingus spoke of the plans during a dialogue with the Center for Strategic and International Studies on July 2.

“We’ve been trying to advocate this for some time now, and the secretary recently made the decision to allow us to move out on it, because we cannot move fast enough in this space,” Mingus said, adding that the C-UAS challenge is akin to the improvised explosive device crisis which also led to the creation of a dedicated unit in 2006.

“Counter-UAS is our IED of today and we need an organisation that is joint interagency, and has the money and the authorities to go after it from requirements all the way through acquisition in a rapid way to be able to keep pace with [the threat],” Mingus said.
