CASA to continue broad-area BVLOS trial as long-term guidance is developed

Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) will continue its broad-area beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) drone trial while developing a long-term approach to these operations.

Following an internal review, CASA is working on an enduring framework that builds on the existing trial arrangements, which provide eligible operators with more flexible pathways to conduct BVLOS flights across larger areas.

The regulator expects to open public consultation in November 2026 on draft guidance for broad-area BVLOS operations. The proposed guidance will form Annex B to Advisory Circular AC 101-06 and build on the pathways introduced through the trial.

CASA will seek industry feedback to ensure the guidance is clear and practical for operators applying for broad-area BVLOS approvals.

Existing trial arrangements will remain in place until a long-term solution is established, allowing eligible operators to continue using the current pathways.
