The United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it has received reports that the cooling tower of a nuclear reactor unit was hit by a drone at western Russia’s Kursk nuclear power plant (NPP).
IAEA said the reactor unit was operating at the time it was hit, but continued operating as before and no fire broke out.
In Ukraine, IAEA teams at NPPs continue to report drones in their monitoring areas. During the past week, the Khmelnytskyy NPP reported 13 drones, with the IAEA team there sheltering twice over the weekend following air raid alarms. The Rivne NPP reported eight drones, the South Ukraine NPP reported 35 drones — some as close as 1.5 kilometres from the site — and the Chornobyl site reported 48 drones in its vicinity.
IAEA said the continued presence of military activity and drones near nuclear facilities further undermines nuclear safety and security.
