Wrap and Frenel to develop directed energy laser capability for C-UAS platform

Wrap Technologies is expanding its strategic relationship with Frenel Imaging Ltd, creating a broader commercial framework through which technologies sourced by Frenel can be brought into WRAP’s WrapShield platform.

“The first capability being advanced under that framework is laser directed energy for counter unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS), in which Frenel’s passive thermal polarimetric detection and classification technology is being integrated as the perception and tracking layer for laser effector systems developed by an established directed-energy manufacturer,” Wrap said in a 24 August press release.

Last week, the company announced USD 12 million in institutional financing. Wrap is now looking to expand WrapShield across a larger public safety, defence and enterprise market.

The directed-energy technology being developed through the Frenel relationship includes a family of fibre-laser C-UAS capabilities designed to address different operational environments and applications, including man-portable, vehicle-mounted and fixed site configurations.

The companies are also exploring integrated fire-control subsystems and a dazzler capability as well as considering integration with external sensing, tracking and command-and-control technologies.
