Farnborough 2026 – Destinus unveils Mach 2 C-UAS/ artillery shell interceptor concept

Destinus, headquartered in the Netherlands,  today previewed Vorexon, a concept-stage Mach 2 ground-based interceptor being designed to provide selective point defence of critical military and infrastructure assets against artillery rockets and selected artillery shells.

“The concept addresses a layer largely missing from European integrated air defence: rapidly identifying incoming projectiles predicted to strike a defended area and engaging only those that threaten priority assets,” said the company in a press statement.  “Vorexon is conceived for deployment around command posts, air-defence radars and batteries, ammunition stores, bridges, logistics hubs and other high-value sites. It is intended to complement existing air-defence and counter-battery systems, not replace them.

Vorexon is intended to operate as an effector within an integrated sensor and fire-control network, says the company. External radars would detect and track incoming projectiles, calculate predicted impact points and prioritise those threatening the defended area. After launch, the interceptor would receive midcourse updates before a planned active radar seeker provides terminal homing, with engagement decisions remaining under operator command. Because warning windows may be measured in tens of seconds, sensor coverage, track quality and engagement geometry are as important as interceptor speed. The current concept targets a top speed above Mach 2 and a maximum engagement range beyond 20 kilometres. The effective engagement envelope will depend on projectile type, trajectory, sensor track quality and engagement geometry. The interceptor is intended for mobile or fixed multi-round canister launchers, supporting high ready-round density and distributed protection around critical assets.

A central design  objective is to combine the speed and agility required against artillery rockets with a unit cost and production rate that keep the cost exchange favourable to the defender. The same architecture could also provide a secondary capability against selected subsonic threats, including cruise missiles and glide bombs, while remaining optimised for point defence against artillery rockets and selected shells.

Destinus is targeting a major development milestone in 2027. The Farnborough preview presents the operational requirement, the proposed system architecture and the industrial path towards serial production.”
