Moldova ‘needs interceptor drones’, Sandu says

Moldova’s President Maia Sandu told a podcast that the country needs interceptor drones and said new legislation was required to facilitate their manufacture.
Moldova has recorded several instances of unauthorised drones in its airspace or falling in its territory over the last few years. The most recent incident concerns a drone which crashed in a village in the east of the country today, according to the Moldovan Defence Ministry.

“On June 8, 2026, at 00:20, the surveillance systems of the National Army and those of cross-border cooperation recorded the crossing of the state border of the Republic of Moldova by an unmanned aerial vehicle from the direction of the Mihailovca-Lopatna locality,” a statement from the ministry reads. “Following the intervention of specialised structures of the Ministry of Interior, it was confirmed that fragments from an unmanned aerial vehicle were found on an agricultural field near the Lopatna locality. Traces attested at the scene indicate the previous occurrence of an explosion. The fragments detected are being examined to establish the origin of the aircraft and the circumstances of the incident. We note that this night a massive Russian attack with drones and missiles took place on Ukraine. The responsible institutions continue to document the case and monitor the situation.”

Speaking to the podcast, Sandu said that there is a risk that drones will fall on Moldova and the country will be unable to do anything about it. She has asked the government to “begin introducing or preparing legislative amendments” that would enable the creation of public and private partnerships for counter-drone and other defence technology development as well as attract foreign investors. Sandu noted that talks are already underway with Ukraine to procure interceptor drones.
