Following a consultation period, Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has published Advisory Circular (AC) 101-06 (AusSORA), which sets the method for assessing complex drone operations in Australia.
From 11 May 2026, operators should use AusSORA when applying for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) and other complex drone operations.
The new AC adapts the Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems (JARUS) SORA 2.5 framework for Australian conditions; updates ground risk, containment and operational safety objectives; and replaces SORA 2.0 ground risk assessment – requirement and alternate criteria – TMI – 2024-03 from 11 May 2026.
