Nokia obtains EASA DVR for M2 risk mitigation

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has announced that Nokia Solutions and Networks OY has obtained EASA Design Verification Report for the M2 risk mitigation with a High Level of Robustness (M2 High) and enhanced containment. The EASA Design Verification was conducted in accordance with the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) methodology, as defined in Regulation (EU) 2019/947.

“The main objective of this evaluation was to assess the ground risk reduction and containment function demonstrated by Nokia’s LTE/5G Drone System, and to define the operational limitations and conditions required to achieve enhanced containment and M2 High within a SAIL II operational environment,” EASA said.

This is Nokia’s first Design Verification engagement with EASA, and the company is the first applicant to obtain EASA no technical objection for M2 High mitigations with a drone in that weight category. The process required exploring several new technical domains and means of compliance.

With the DVR, Nokia can obtain operational authorisation from the national authority for their specific concept of operations (ConOps).
