U-Space Berlin launches three-year programme to test parallel drone delivery networks

The U-Space Berlin testbed officially launched yesterday (August 25) as part of Germany’s Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises Real-Labore programme to develop solutions that improve quality of life.

U-Space Berlin is a three-year initiative to test the technology, social, environmental and ecological impact of drones. Deliveries of medical products and food are being tested in an industrial park southeast of Tempelhof-Schöneberg as part of the project.

Labfly (B2B) will use drone to deliver a wide range of range of medical goods – including vaccines and medications, blood and blood products, organs and tissue for transplants, medical supplies or emergency medicine – while  Marktschwalbe and Aramak will organise drone deliveries of meals from the ULLA restaurant for businesses at the business parks around Tempelhof (B2C).

The trial will test three aspects of the low level economy:

  • Desirability – Analyzing the needs and desires of local stakeholders to identify the most relevant use cases, conducting user acceptance testing, learning from best practices in urban last-mile delivery, and providing recommendations for future implementation.
  • Viability – Developing implementation and organizational strategies for the execution of the identified case studies, along with business and financial models, to ensure sustainable implementation and scaling potential.
  • Feasibility – Evaluating the regulatory and environmental framework relevant to the Tempelhof-Schöneberg area to ensure adherence to guidelines for future operations. Identifying and reviewing the best-suited hardware and software technologies for the identified use cases

The team will work with partners (Startup Colors UG/Applied Data Incubator, Technical University of Berlin, DiAvEN Labfly UG, marktschwalbe UG, Murzilli Consulting / M&K Germany GmbH, and Akkon University of Applied Sciences) to examine benefits, legal issues and potential risks, select flight routes, and develop regulatory best practices.
