The Aerospace Center at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has received Federal Aviation Administration approval for its uncrewed aerial systems research programme that will enable it to conduct beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations.
The BVLOS approval means that UTEP is authorised to fly remotely within its 87 square mile range for testing, autonomy and next-generation flight research.
To date, UTEP’s Aerospace Center has conducted research with NASA, the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy and other agencies in areas including drones, propulsion, spacecraft design and the fusion of artificial intelligence, machine learning and advanced materials science.
