US Congress confirmation of Bryan Bedford as FAA Administrator welcomed by AUVSI

The United States Congress has confirmed Bryan Bedford as the new Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to join the FAA team.” Bedford said. “I have a deep respect for the important work FAA employees do to protect the safety and efficiency of our national airspace.”

Bedford brings more than 35 years of aviation experience to the FAA, including 26 years as CEO of Republic Airways. A statement from the FAA said he will “work closely with Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy to build a new, state-of-the-art air traffic control system”.

Bedford will start by visiting FAA facilities nationwide to meet employees and hear their perspectives, gaining a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Chris Rocheleau, who served as Acting Administrator, will now transition to the role of Deputy Administrator to support Bedford.

The Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) has congratulated Bryan Bedford on his confirmation.

“Administrator Bedford’s confirmation ensures the FAA has steady leadership as it advances major regulatory and operational priorities,” said Michael Robbins, President & CEO of AUVSI. “With implementation of the 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act underway, and with H.R. 1, the recently passed budget reconciliation bill, delivering USD 12.5 billion for air traffic control modernisation alongside billions in targeted funding to strengthen US leadership in small uncrewed aircraft systems and counter-drone technologies, this is a defining moment for aviation innovation and security.”

AUVSI hopes for accelerated progress on rulemakings under Bedford’s leadership.

“The US aviation landscape is evolving rapidly,” said Robbins. “With confirmed FAA leadership in place, we are well positioned to modernise the National Airspace System, expand drone use for commercial and public safety missions, and safely integrate advanced air mobility platforms. AUVSI and its members are committed to supporting Administrator Bedford and the FAA in advancing innovation, ensuring safety, and strengthening U.S. competitiveness.”
