San Diego IPP tests BVLOS food deliveries

Uber Eat and ModalAI has carried out a Beyond Visual Line of Site (BVLOS) drone delivery test in an urban area as part of the Federal Aviation Association’s Unmanned Aerial Systems Integrated Pilot Program (IPP) in San Diego, California. ModalAI’s VOXL platform used 4G cellular connectivity to communicate with Uber’s airspace management platform Uber Elevate Cloud Services. The drone was equipped with an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) transponder, enabling the remote pilot to track the drone throughout the flight. The test follows an earlier BVLOS demonstration in July 2019 when the two companies successfully completed a food delivery for San Diego’s IPP. The City of San Diego is a lead participant in the Federal Aviation Association’s Unmanned Aerial Systems Integrated Pilot Program (IPP) in collaboration with 20 regional organizations including the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation.
