A Eurocontrol Linkedin post reports that four recent U-ELCOME demonstrations across Europe have highlighted U-space services can safely and efficiently integrate drones into shared airspace. “These demonstrations mark significant progress towards a harmonised and operational U-space framework in Europe,” said the agency.
In Castel Campagnano, Italy, within the Italian cluster coordinated by ENAV, a demonstration focused on interoperability between U-space service providers from Italy (D-Flight) & Spain (ITG Technology Center), connected via a Common Information Service Provider (CISP). “Missions supported infrastructure inspection and environmental monitoring,” said the Eurocontrol post. “A simulated emergency with a manned ultralight aircraft tested contingency management, using electronic conspicuity tools and dynamic airspace reconfiguration.”
Meanwhile in Spain, in Lumbier, Navarre, ENAIRE led an emergency response exercise where drones and manned aviation safely shared U-space airspace. The demonstration highlighted the potential of digital platforms in civil protection and involved regional government representatives.
At IAM Spain by Expodrónica, four U-space service providers – one already certified – operated simultaneously within a simulated U-space volume. An Italian provider successfully interacted with Spanish systems, demonstrating cross-border coordination. And in Andalusia, a BVLOS drone flight transported medical supplies between remote sites, achieving Europe’s first in-flight handover between two ground control stations 24 km apart. The mission showcased the potential of UAS for healthcare logistics.
