Dublin City Council considers drone use as Manna eyes expansion

Dublin City Council has put together a two-page “drone position” paper, the Dublin Inquirer reports. The Dublin Council effort is separate to the Department of Transport’s national drone strategy, which it is currently working on.

“Its position is that the situation is “complex and evolving” and it’s going to have a think about what to do, the article states.

The position paper, obtained by the Inquirer, alludes to planning applications for drone bases in Tallaght and Dundrum.

Drone delivery company Manna, which is already operating in Ireland, has plans to expand across Dublin, including the city council area. The Inquirer article says that “Manna’s characteristic drone-base setup was already waiting in the car park behind its offices in Glasnevin” in June, noting its “black, orange and blue launch pads, plus a shipping container for use as an operations centre”.

The article adds that Dublin City Council has set up an internal Drones Governance Group “dedicated to discussing the potential role of the city in any future legislation or regulations regarding drones in the urban space”. The council has also “engaged with 19 internal sections to proactively explore where additional drone flying restrictions might be appropriate as part of a wider research and innovation partnership,” the Inquirer says, citing the position paper.

The paper also notes that the council will arrange further engagement and consultation around drones in the Dublin city area and will be hosting a series of community engagements to discuss issues outlined this autumn.
