Airspace World 2025: Brussels airport to introduce Skeydrone intelligent drone detector

Brussels airport is due to introduce a new drone detection system over the next few month which only raises an alert when a drone is detected that could impact operations.

The dynamic drone detection system, developed by Skeydrone and shown for the first time at Airspace World 2025 in Lisbon, is built around the concept of focusing on the arrival and departure paths of aircraft landing and taking off at the airport and over the runway itself. The aim of the new drone detection software is to ensure that air traffic controllers are only alerted to potential rogue drone threats that could directly impact aircraft operations.

Airport operations are classified into red, orange, yellow and green areas of potential threat.

The software conducts a 3D analysis of whether the drone is a threat or not, based on the active runway configuration at the airport. Drones that are operating in the area with permission to fly are also actively monitored by the system; if they stray beyond their agreed flight envelope, an alert is raised.

“We have around 12 and 25 drone detections a day at Brussels airport and if we reacted to each of those the airport would be closed 24/7,” said the company’s Didier Decaestecker.

The system is being marketed to air navigation service providers and airports worldwide.
