The US National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO) Center for Research and Education’s Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Multistate Collaborative has released its first topic papers. These papers address the states’ role in AAM, infrastructure needs, opportunities to leverage existing general aviation infrastructure, and approaches to harmonize policies across the states.
NASAO is the nationally recognized voice for the public interest in aviation on behalf of the states and territories. NASAO represents state government aviation agencies in all 50 states, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
According to the organisation:
“After two years of thoughtful discussions and gathering in different parts of the country, these papers are the culmination of thoughts by the 36 state members, setting the framework for nationwide consistency as AAM is integrated into the national airspace system. The papers are now available on the Collaborative’s new website.”
The first three papers are titled: “Overview of the Collaborative and Role of the States”, “Utilizing Public General Aviation Airports for Advanced Air Mobility” and “Key Considerations of Physical and Digital Infrastructure and Exploring Minimum Service Levels”.
“In the fall of 2023, a small group of State Aviation Officials began conversations regarding the need to collaborate and harmonize efforts of the States, working together to find consensus on how the states can manage the rollout of the ground-based policies and services supporting AAM,” said Greg Campbell, Virginia Department of Aviation Director. “This culminated in the first meeting of what would become the AAM Multistate Collaborative AAMMC, near Dulles International Airport in Virginia, in November 2023. This small gathering of eight to ten States in that initial summit, has evolved and strengthened, representing 36 States participating in the AAMMC which is now nationally recognized for its constructive collaboration.”
“The multistate collaborative effort for advanced air mobility is the epitome of the important work NASAO does,” said Martin Blake, NASAO Board Chair and INDOT Multimodal Division Director. “The amazing things that happen when people from over 30 state governments, federal officials, and industry professionals gather is a profound experience. When so many intelligent people gather sharing their unique perspectives, the tendency leans toward ‘boiling the ocean,’ but otherwise many of those thoughts and ideas would be left unspoken and never addressed. NASAO is an amazing source of bringing folks together in a way that slices a huge challenge into manageable tasks with the states working together in partnership with FAA and each other. The end results are going to be transformational for transportation shaping the future in a way never thought possible. NASAO’s AAM Multistate Collaborative is at the forefront of that transformation.”
