DLR validates UAS integration services in AREA U-space project

The German Aerospace Centre (DLR) has tested u-space services for uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) as part of a validation campaign in Cochstedt.

The AREA U-Space project has been researching the safe and efficient integration of UAS into future airspace operations. Under this project, the DLR Institute of Flight Guidance and the DLR Institute of Flight Systems recently tested modern U-space services under realistic conditions and gained valuable insights for the future safe integration of diverse uncrewed aircraft into German airspace.

The validation campaign focused on the practical integration of U-space in collaboration with Frequentis. At the test centre, DLR tested Frequentis U-space services with different UAS types performing a typical transport and logistics use case, in order to validate their performance and interoperability in a controlled environment. In a LinkedIn post, DLR said that various drones tested different modes of operation simultaneously. “They executed U-space-compliant flights, whilst enhancing situational awareness for all operators and third parties, including air traffic controllers.”
