Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has published new guidance on how aerial drone designers and manufacturers can manage cyber threats. It is also designed to help drone operators understand the cybersecurity risks that could affect aviation safety.
The new Advisory Circular (AC) 21-57 – Airworthiness cybersecurity of remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) focuses on safety-critical aircraft subsystems, ground systems, command and control (C2) links and supporting infrastructure.
The AC includes security concepts, threat categorisation and a practical risk assessment process. There is an appendix with example threats and mitigations across common functional elements.
The AC does not introduce new regulatory requirements. It supports existing operational approval approaches, including SORA.
