Indra has signed a contract with the Romanian Air Traffic Services Administration (ROMATSA) to use Indra’s UTM Hub system as part of the SPATIO SESAR 3 Fast Track project – U-space Separation Management programme. The collaboration aims to leverage research and development to continuously enhance air safety by integrating new uncrewed users into shared airspace.
The SPATIO SESAR project aims to deliver a separation management service that will help drones safely and simultaneously operate in very low-level airspace. It builds on previous research, including that conducted by such SESAR projects as DACUS, BUBBLES and TindAIR. In March, researchers announced that SPATIO is in the process of developing a number of innovative new services, including services for dynamic capacity management, strategic conflict resolution and tactical conflict prediction and resolution.
Indra’s UTM Hub is designed to coordinate and centralise all the services required to ensure the correct operation of drones. It implements a connectivity layer through which the different actors of the system may exchange information and services. The platform features a real-time, bidirectional interconnection layer with the air traffic management (ATM) system, enabling data exchange. The UTM Hub acts as a proxy and protects the ATM system. The UTM Hub can also automatically translate all information into ATM standards, avoiding the need to modify the current ATM system. Additionally, it grants the authorities the ability to centralise critical services, coordinate the different actors as well as incorporate third-party services.
