SHEPHERD project draws up a methodology to assess compliance with industry standards

The SHEPHERD project has submitted its first deliverable which is now available for download on the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) website. The main objective of this project is to build upon the work performed by the AW-Drones project – which identified standards that can potentially be used to demonstrate compliance to regulatory requirements in the drone sector – and complement its analysis by technically assessing the suitability of the standards identified by AW-Drones.

SHEPHERD team members include  WingAzur DronesMichael AlloucheGerman Aerospace Center (DLR)Murzilli ConsultingANRA TechnologiesEuroUSC Italia S.r.l. and Volocopter GmbH, coordinated by Deep Blue.

The Deliverable “Industry standards assessment criteria and work methodology” details the work methodology that will be used by the SHEPHERD project to assess if the identified standards are technically adequate to fully demonstrate compliance with the objective of the requirements contained in the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA), EASA’s Special Condition (SC) Light-UAS for Medium Risk and the U-space regulation (EU) 2021/664.

The work methodology includes:
✅ The list of the standards that will be assessed based on the AW-Drones project deliverables and in line with the EUSCG U-RDP;
✅ The identification of the requirements against which each standard will be assessed; and
✅ The methodology to carry out the assessment.

EASA is funding the two-year SHEPHERD project under the contract “Horizon Europe Project: UAS standard”. The first SHEPHERD deliverable is available for download here:
