Russia issues first certificates for external pilot-instructors of UAS above 30kg

Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsiya, has issued the first certificates for external pilot-instructors of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) weighing more than 30kg. The training programme consisted of two stages: the first provided the acquisition of remote pilot skills, the second focused on instructor skills.

The theoretical part was taught by specialists from the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) Aviation Training Center. The practical portion of the program was implemented by MAI in partnership with Radar MMS Research and Production Enterprise. The organisation provided a VT-440m helicopter-type UAS, weighing 500kg , and a corresponding simulator, designed to replicate the work of a remote pilot station.

“Five specialists who completed training at the MAI Aviation and Non-Aviation Personnel Training Center and confirmed their theoretical knowledge with the Federal Air Transport Agency received a certificate as an external pilot-instructor,” Rosaviatsiya said. The graduates will also receive the necessary documents to obtain remote pilot licenses and the instructor qualification to enable them to conduct flights and train the next generation of remote pilots for heavy unmanned aircraft.
