Regional Gulf Civil Aviation Authority to be established

The Gulf Cooperation Council has agreed to establish the Gulf Civil Aviation Authority, to strengthen regional integration and coordinate aviation development across the Gulf countries. The organisation’s headquarters will be in the United Arab Emirates.

Airports Council International Asia-Pacific and Middle East (ACI APAC & MID) welcomed the decision. ACI APAC & MID Director General Stefano Baronci said ACI has consistently called for the creation of a unified aviation regulator in the region in order to address fragmentation, improve coordination and enable more harmonised air transport policies.

“We are convinced that this development represents the first step toward a more integrated single aviation market, one in which constraints on market access can be progressively eased to further advance connectivity, open new opportunities for secondary airports, and ultimately benefit the travelling public.”

The Gulf Cooperation Council also announced a ‘one-stop travel system’ that aims to complement wider regional integration efforts.
