The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a request for information (RFI) as it seeks to modernise the way air traffic controllers receive flight data and move aircraft between facilities.
The RFI asks how proposed solutions would facilitate seamless integration of future operational capabilities such as uncrewed aerial systems, advanced air mobility, space operations or other new national airspace functions without requiring major redesign.
The new system would replace the current en route and terminal systems with a single platform for air traffic control called the Common Automation Platform (CAP). The aim is to help controllers to organise airspace more efficiently, and address the growing complexity and evolving demands of airspace.
The FAA also stated that a prime Integrator to manage the building of a brand new air traffic control system will be announced soon.
