FAA releases TSOs for detect and avoid and air-to-air radar systems

The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has released two technical standing orders, TSO-C211a and TSO-C212a, which establish the minimum performance standards for Detect and Avoid (DAA) and Air-to-Air Radar (ATAR) systems.

The updates incorporate technical standards from RTCA DO-365C Change 1 and RTCA DO-366B.

Writing on LinkedIn, Robert Rose, CEO of Reliable Robotics, welcomed the new TSOs and said they provide a framework for certifying the company’s DAA systems.

“Key additions include Class 5 for terminal area operations and Class B radar functionality designed to support ACAS Xu collision avoidance, as well as performance requirements for operations in urban, high-density operations below 5,000 feet,” Rose explained.

Both TSOs are effective from February 26 2026 until August 24 2027. DAA and ATAR equipment approved under previous TSO authorisations may still be manufactured under the provisions of their original approvals.
