PANSA and Polish Space Agency sign airspace safety agreement

The Polish Space Agency (POLSA) and the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency (PANSA) have signed a cooperation agreement on the exchange of information on events affecting the safety of aircraft operations in Polish airspace.

The agreement assumes close cooperation in the matter of the potential uncontrolled entry of an artificial space object into the Earth’s atmosphere and its possible flight over the territory of Poland, as well as covering other events affecting the safety of flight operations.

“POLSA, by leveraging its observation capabilities, including its own sensors, can be a source of invaluable knowledge and an important link in the early warning system against potential threats from space. We will share this knowledge and data to increase the safety of flight operations in Polish airspace, and consequently, the safety of citizens,” said Marta Wachowicz, President of POLSA.

“Cooperation with POLSA is a milestone, a much-needed step towards immediately obtaining full information about all objects that may appear in our airspace,”  said Magdalena Jaworska-Maćkowiak, President of PANSA.

As part of its space safety activities, POLSA conducts continuous monitoring of re-entry events of artificial space objects (rocket stages, debris, inactive satellites) over the EU and Poland. Their number currently exceeds 150 per month, and agency experts regularly conduct detailed analyses of objects with a higher risk index, including those whose debris, due to their mass or structure, may reach the Earth’s surface. Information notes are regularly sent to the Government Security Council (RCB), among others, and, following an agreement between POLSA and PANSA, they will also become the basis for the issuance of dedicated NOTAM messages for civil and military pilots.
