New EDA project focuses on military drones in European airspace

The European Defence Agency (EDA) has launched the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Single European Sky Experimental Integration (USEXI) project, which is a new initiative designed to improve the way military drones operate in European airspace.

The EDA project focuses on ensuring safe and autonomous navigation even when satellite signals are disrupted, jammed or denied. At its core is the AIRSENSE navigation system that EDA says “acts like a sixth sense”. Instead of using satellites, it utilises smart sensors and artificial intelligence to understand the environment, maintain positioning and keep the mission going, even in contested skies.

Developed in close cooperation with aviation stakeholders, this EDA project addresses one of the key priorities identified in the European Commission’s White Paper on Defence Readiness for 2030: strengthening the role of drones in future operations.
