MEPs call on Europe to stimulate growth in the drone industry

Three members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have called for concrete measures to stimulate growth in the drone industry.

In a joint initiative, Jan-Christoph Oetjen, Sakis Arnaoutoglou and Paulo do Nascimento Cabral presented their request at an event in the European Parliament. The Association for Unmanned Aviation (UAV DACH) supports the MEPs and the association’s Deputy Chairman, Oliver Gregor Lichtenstein, was involved in the technical development of the calls for action to the European Commission. As the only representative of a European UAS/AAM trade association, he also actively participated in the three-hour information event to demonstrate to MEPs firsthand the urgency of consistent industry support to build a sustainably successful drone economy in Europe.

Following the event, entitled “Unleashing the potential of civilian drones,” Oetjen, Arnaoutoglou and do Nascimento Cabral presented a joint letter to the relevant EU Commissioners. In it, the three policymakers emphasise the extreme urgency of closing the growing gap between the European Union’s strategic ambitions and activities regarding uncrewed systems. They write that Europe is at a crossroads and that clear, focused action to build an internationally competitive UAS/AAM industry must be a top priority.

“UAV DACH expressly welcomes the initiative from the ranks of the European Parliament and will actively support it in the interests of its members and the entire European UAS/AAM industry,” the association said on July 1. “The development of an internationally leading drone economy is crucial for a resilient and effective Europe in social, economic, and defense policy issues. Therefore, swift and consistent action is needed to ensure that the European Union does not permanently lose touch with the international leadership in the global race.”
