US House hearing to discuss rise of malicious drone use

The United States House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance will hold a hearing today (September 16) at 2:00 p.m. ET on the emerging threats from drones.

The hearing, “Unmanned and Unchecked: Confronting the Rising Threat of Malicious Drone Use in America,” will focus on the growing threat posed by unauthorised and criminal use of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) in both domestic and international airspace.

The subcommittee notes a surge in UAS incursions near US airports as well as the exploitation of drones by criminal organisations and cartels for smuggling, surveillance and attacks. The hearing will examine how these emerging threats endanger public safety and law enforcement operations.

Speakers are scheduled to include Sgt Robert Dooley, Statewide UAS / C‑UAS Coordinator within the Office of Emergency Operations, Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles; Brett Feddersen, Vice President of Strategy & Government Affairs, US, at D-Fend Solutions; and Dr. Ryan Wallace, Professor of Aeronautical Science, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
